Grocery Industry Introduces Exciting New Definition Of ‘100%’
Canadians learned this week that “100% pure maple syrup” apparently means “contains enough maple syrup that nobody involved expected you to hire a laboratory.”
A proposed class-action lawsuit alleges cans sold as pure Quebec maple syrup contained less than 50% maple syrup, padded out with cane sugar or syrup from elsewhere, essentially the grocery equivalent of putting on a Canadiens jersey and claiming you grew up in Trois-Rivières.
The producer reportedly sold hundreds of thousands of cans through major grocery chains for years, suggesting Canada’s food inspection system remains extremely effective at detecting fraud immediately after the CBC does.
Customers could receive refunds plus at least $100 in punitive damages.
Industry officials insist lessons will be learned.
Beginning immediately, counterfeit syrup will be clearly labelled “Canadian-made affordable maple alternative” and qualify for a federal subsidy.
