Alberta Recognized For Innovative New Approach To Freedom Of Information: No

, , , ,

Alberta’s government has been honoured with the 2025 Code of Silence Award after proving that nothing terrifies it quite like the possibility of Albertans discovering what their government is doing.

Investigators found officials routinely treated freedom-of-information laws less as legislation than as helpful suggestions to ignore until applicants gave up, died of old age, or forgot why they asked in the first place.

The province responded by replacing the law with one critics say makes access even harder, embracing the timeless political philosophy that the best way to fix a scandal is to legislate the evidence further away.

Government officials declined to discuss the award, citing a new exemption covering conversations between ministers, political staff, and apparently reality itself.

At press time, the trophy had been heavily redacted before being displayed to the public.
