Alberta Separation Campaign Accidentally Reinvents Nigerian Prince Email Scam
Alberta’s separation campaign has officially entered its “Nigerian prince with a constitutional law degree” phase after a third-party advertiser promised that a $1,000 donation could someday come with fractional ownership of land that hasn’t been bought yet in a country that doesn’t exist yet, and maybe citizenship if everything works out.
Critics initially assumed the fundraising success reflected overwhelming grassroots enthusiasm. It turns out the grassroots were mostly one family writing cheques to itself, proving that nothing says “people’s movement” like repeatedly checking your own mailbox for donations.
The group’s spokesperson insists everything is perfectly legal despite public skepticism, while its chief financial officer brings the kind of résumé that reminds Albertans background checks are apparently less rigorous than fantasy real estate pitches.
At this point, Alberta’s referendum is less about democracy than stress-testing satire’s ability to keep up with reality.
