Alberta Orders Libraries To Prepare For War Against Illustrations
The Alberta government has given libraries until January to lock away books containing sexually explicit images, proving once again that no public institution is safe from a politician with too much free time and a vague understanding of how libraries work.
Under the new rules, librarians must identify every offending comic, graphic novel, film, video game and magazine, build a separate restricted section, verify the age of every teenager, confirm parental permission, and somehow still help people find books between serving as morality police.
Government officials defended the policy, saying Alberta’s children deserve protection from dangerous images, unlike the internet, which continues existing largely unbothered.
The province says the changes aren’t censorship, because nothing says “freedom” quite like requiring paperwork before checking out a graphic novel while carrying an unrestricted smartphone capable of accessing literally every pornographic image ever uploaded by humanity.
