Danielle Smith outraged Indigenous Nation using sovereignty without first complaining about Ottawa
Alberta’s government is scrambling after Saddle Lake Cree Nation invoked Treaty 6 to protect trans and two-spirit youth, revealing the province’s passionate support for sovereignty contains a previously undisclosed “white people only” clause.
Saddle Lake plans to provide gender-affirming care under Treaty 6’s medicine chest provision, overriding provincial restrictions introduced to defend “parental rights” by having the government decide what healthcare parents may choose for their children.
Officials were particularly alarmed by the Nation asserting inherent jurisdiction, a concept Alberta strongly supports whenever it means telling Ottawa to fuck off.
Premier Danielle Smith has repeatedly championed Alberta’s right to resist federal interference, apparently unaware Indigenous nations might have invented that argument before her podcast did.
At press time, Alberta lawyers were frantically searching Treaty 6 for the clause reading, “Except if this becomes inconvenient for some reason in 2026.”
