Poilievre Wins Leadership Review; Mark Carney Thanks Him for Job Security
In a result that surprised no one inside Conservative headquarters but caused audible concern elsewhere, Pierre Poilievre secured 87.4 per cent support in his leadership review Friday, confirming that the party remains deeply comfortable with its current trajectory.
Poilievre celebrated with a primetime address in Calgary before thousands of loyal supporters, opening with a tribute to his Alberta roots and the familiar suggestion that the rest of the country might benefit from thinking a little more like Alberta. He again invoked the “promise of Canada,” a phrase now so well-worn it may qualify for heritage status.
According to Poilievre, that promise was obliterated by a decade of Liberal rule, though he also insisted he could work constructively with Prime Minister Mark Carney to resolve the U.S. trade war, an appeal for unity delivered immediately after several uninterrupted years of rage.
Carney congratulated Poilievre on the win, adding, “I’m very happy for him. Frankly, it’s nice to see my job and political future looking this secure.”
Delegates later cast their ballots, overwhelmingly endorsing Poilievre and proving once again that shock is temporary, but commitment is forever.
