Poilievre Responds to Trump’s Davos Appearance With Carefully Managed Silence
It is only weeks into the new year, and U.S. President Donald Trump is once again everywhere, including Davos, where he reminded a room full of billionaires that Greenland remains, in his heart, an unfinished shopping cart.
Appearing at the World Economic Forum, Trump warned Canada to act “grateful,” a remark that echoed politely through the Swiss Alps before being translated into several languages, none of which improved it. Prime Minister Mark Carney, without naming Trump, urged middle powers to stand up to “hegemons,” confirming that the rules-based order is no longer missing, but officially presumed dead.
Back home, Conservatives watched closely as Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre continued his careful strategy of acknowledging Trump’s existence without making eye contact. Facing a leadership vote next week, Poilievre has so far responded with a repost on X, a move insiders describe as “statesmanlike enough.”
Former adviser Ben Woodfinden says Conservatives must accept reality: Trump is not a phase, and neither is the attention span of Canadian voters. Greenland, meanwhile, declined to comment, citing exhaustion.
