Alberta, a province better known for turning dinosaurs into pipelines, is now flirting with the idea of splitting atoms instead of hairs. Capital Power and Ontario Power Generation released a study suggesting small modular nuclear reactors could be the “right fit” for Alberta, presumably because nothing says “cowboy spirit” like handling enriched uranium in your backyard.
The study claims SMRs could power industry, reduce emissions, and, bonus, keep lights on in the winter without having to beg B.C. for hydro. Critics, however, note that “small” is a relative term, especially when you’re dealing with technology that comes with its own glowing reputation.
Supporters insist SMRs are safe, efficient, and just the right size for a province still afraid of solar panels. Skeptics, meanwhile, wonder if this is really about clean energy, or if Albertans simply like the idea of calling themselves a “nuclear province” at rodeos.
