Man Claims Minister Broke Election Law; Province Wonders If Anyone Still Reads Those

, , , ,

In a development that has elevated Alberta politics from “mildly confusing” to “full circus,” petitioner Joshua Eberhart has accused cabinet minister Dale Nally of committing the gravest sin known to democracy: posting about someone’s voting record like it’s a Yelp review.

In a fiery letter on social media, Alberta’s preferred venue for both governance and petty bickering, Eberhart alleges that Nally violated the Elections Act and then used the whole affair to spin “creative fiction” about the recall petition’s origins. Eberhart insists he has voted plenty of times and is not, despite Nally’s insinuations, the shadowy frontman of a clandestine left-wing recall army.

He says he’ll now ask Alberta’s election commissioner to investigate, presumably right after the commissioner finishes Googling “why is this happening.”

Meanwhile, political observers warn this saga could spark a dangerous precedent: politicians being held accountable for things they post online.
