Kenney Shocked to Find Recall Law Works Exactly as Intended, Just Not for the People He Intended

, , , ,

Jason Kenney insists Alberta’s recall legislation was never meant to be wielded like a political cudgel, but rather as an “ultimate tool of accountability” against egregiously unethical politicians. Conveniently, 14 UCP caucus members are now test-driving that very tool, courtesy of petitions from furious constituents.

“My government purposely set very high thresholds,” Kenney said Thursday, nodding to British Columbia’s 1991 NDP model – because nothing says bipartisan wisdom like lifting ideas from the other side three decades ago.

Kenney emphasized the law targets only illegal or grossly unethical behavior. “Policy disagreements? That’s what elections are for,” he said, just days after citizens disagreed so vehemently they nearly broke the law… of patience.

Political analysts say Alberta residents are now discovering the ultimate accountability: the awkward thrill of realizing that a law you helped design to curb bad behavior can boomerang directly onto your own party.
