In a bold bid to make grocery shopping “feel less like a controlled demolition of your bank account,” President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is scrapping tariffs on beef, coffee and tropical fruit. The administration declared the move would “dramatically lower prices,” prompting millions of Americans to squint at their receipts and mutter, “Since when were we paying these tariffs?”
Economists were similarly puzzled, noting that tariffs are paid by importers, not shoppers, unless, of course, those importers have been quietly treating the U.S. consumer like an ATM with no PIN. One trade expert suggested the White House might be confused about how tariffs work, adding: “Frankly, at this point, who isn’t?”
Still, the administration insists the plan will “save families thousands,” though it declined to explain the math. Grocery executives have already promised to “pass on the savings,” which many Americans interpret as a threat.
