Alberta’s West Coast Pipeline: Now With 100% More Hope, 0% More Private Sector
In what experts are calling “a wildly optimistic folk tale,” former Alberta energy minister Sonya Savage bluntly admitted that the dream of a bitumen pipeline to the northwest B.C. coast has about the same chance of happening as climate-friendly coal: “almost zero” without government cash.
Meanwhile, Premier Danielle Smith penned an earnest letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney urging that her imaginary pipeline be fast-tracked by fall – just in time to outrun skyrocketing Venezuelan heavy oil exports and stoke Alberta’s competitive fire.
Observers note that the plan currently boasts no private investor, no route, no route map and no reality checks, but plenty of political gusto. Environmentalists and First Nations remain unimpressed. Critics joke that Alberta’s “build it and they will come” strategy is really just a charming new provincial tourism slogan.
