Alberta’s Flatrock County Council has entered full damage control mode this week, after Councillor Randy “Old-School Values” McLaren publicly referred to the neighbouring First Nation as “lucky we even let them hold powwows near our golf course.” The comment, made during what was supposed to be a closed session on land use, was picked up by a hot mic and broadcast directly to Facebook Live, where it gained over 50,000 views and zero support.
In response, the county issued a formal apology, a ceremonial fruit basket, and a hastily organized “Reconciliation BBQ,” complete with culturally insensitive face painting and a bouncy tipi for kids.
“We value our Indigenous partners deeply,” said Reeve Lisa Farnham, standing uncomfortably next to a visibly unamused band chief. “Randy’s comments don’t reflect who we are, just who we accidentally elect.”
The First Nation has yet to comment, though one spokesperson was seen Googling “how to curse land with legal standing.”
