Alberta Told No to Referendum, Begins Passive-Aggressive Countdown to Separation Anyway

Premier Danielle Smith’s latest bid to put a separation question on a future referendum ballot is currently seeking the opinion of the Court, with federal officials politely suggesting she try yoga instead to get out her anger issues more constructively.

The proposal, which reportedly asked Albertans if they’d like to “peacefully yeet themselves from Confederation,” was met with rolled eyes in Ottawa and even louder sighs from Calgary, where residents are still recovering from the last constitutional tantrum.

Legal scholars say this is less about the question itself and more about “not wanting to humor Alberta’s seasonal performance of political theatre.” One insider noted, “It’s August. We hoped we’d get through at least one summer without someone threatening to take their oil and go home.”

Smith has vowed to rework the question. Early drafts include: “Do you like freedom?” and “Should Alberta be the Texas of the North, but colder and angrier?”
