Alberta Teachers Threaten Strike, Province Says “Please Don’t” While Standing on Shaky Budget Stool

Alberta’s classrooms may soon echo not with the sound of learning, but with the eerie silence of absent teachers, after the province’s educators delivered a formal strike notice this week. The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) said the move came after months of stalled negotiations, growing workloads, and what they called “the government’s innovative plan to do more with less until less becomes nothing.”

The province, for its part, insists it wants to avoid a strike. A government spokesperson assured parents they’re committed to keeping schools open, though offered no clear plan beyond crossing fingers and hoping teachers suddenly rediscover their love of unpaid overtime.

Meanwhile, parents brace for impact, dusting off memories of pandemic homeschooling and wondering if algebra really matters in a world on fire. The ATA said it would rather settle than strike—but only if the province realizes education isn’t something you can just Google.
