Alberta Separatists Pitch U.S. on Oil, Water, and Becoming America’s Friend With Benefits
Officials in the Donald Trump administration quietly discussed loaning Alberta hundreds of millions of dollars to help it become its own country, according to one separatist who says he was basically standing in the president’s aura at the time.
Dennis Modry, former CEO of the Alberta Prosperity Project, told supporters that U.S. officials immediately recognized Alberta as “a sovereign nation for the first time,” a phrase historians note is usually reserved for places that already exist. Modry said talks included a $500-million “transition loan” and a plan for the U.S. to exchange every Canadian dollar held by Albertans for a U.S. one, presumably after a quick laugh and a security escort.
While no media outlet has confirmed the meetings’ contents, Modry assured attendees that Alberta’s oil, water, farms, forests, metals, coal, and “industrious vibes” make it irresistible to America. U.S. and Alberta officials declined to comment, reportedly because they were too busy not recognizing Alberta as a country.
