Alberta separatists confident low voter turnout can finally make unpopular idea everyone’s problem
Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi warned Saturday that separatists could win October’s referendum if the overwhelming majority opposed to detonating the province simply assumes nobody would actually be stupid enough to press the button.
“Every single separatist is going to vote,” Nenshi said, identifying the terrifying democratic advantage enjoyed by people who have made hating Ottawa their entire personality.
Polls show separatists remain a minority, prompting thousands of pro-Canada Albertans to consider staying home and recreating Brexit’s wildly successful strategy of discovering consequences the morning after the vote.
UCP separatists insist independence would unleash Alberta’s economy once freed from Canada, presumably immediately after establishing a currency, central bank, military, international treaties, border agreements and some method of getting exports to an ocean without passing through a foreign country.
Supporters remain confident these details will work themselves out.
After all, Brexit proved leaving a country can be incredibly complicated.
And Britain already had a currency, a navy, and the fucking ocean.
