Alberta Pipeline Leak Blamed On Mysterious Combination Of Pipe, Oil, And Inevitability

, , ,

In what Imperial Oil might generously describe as “the land participating in the energy sector,” roughly 843,000 litres of bitumen emulsion wandered off a pipeline northwest of Cold Lake last week, marking its brief transition from asset to environmental personality.

The company assured the public it “responded immediately,” deploying crews, statements, and the word “contained” with impressive speed. The Alberta Energy Regulator confirmed the emergency phase is over, noting no impacts to wildlife or water, pending the radical possibility that either might still be functioning.

Ecologist Kevin Timoney suggested impacts are, inconveniently, “always” present, though typically reported in the same spirit as a missing receipt. Meanwhile, Chief Kelsey Jacko continues waiting for details, a process now rivaling geological time.

Imperial apologized, as one does when 843,000 litres of something escapes. The cause remains unknown, but early theories include pipes, oil, and a business model that treats “spill” as a seasonal event.

“Spills happen every year,” Jacko noted. Luckily, so do apologies.
