Alberta Party Rebrands as Progressive Tories, Politely Asks Voters to Pretend It’s 2004 Again

What was once the Alberta Party has completed its political journey of self-discovery and emerged Thursday evening as the Progressive Tory Party of Alberta, a name leader Peter Guthrie unveiled via an X post, Canada’s most trusted venue for constitutional announcements.

Guthrie, currently sitting as an Independent after being ejected from the United Conservative Party caucus, said the rebrand better reflects “who we’ve always been,” or at least who voters might vaguely remember from the early 2000s. He joined the Alberta Party specifically to rename it the Progressive Conservatives, a plan that immediately caused mild alarm among lawyers, historians, and anyone who remembers the last time that brand collapsed.

Concerns over naming rights have so far not prevented the announcement, though Elections Alberta had not updated its website as of Thursday night, suggesting the province is still processing whether time is, in fact, a flat circle.

At press time, several Albertans reported a strange feeling of déjà vu and an urge to dig out old lawn signs.
