Alberta misses its own legal deadline, furious Trudeau somehow responsible despite no longer being prime minister
Elections Alberta has missed its legally mandated 48-hour deadline to count referendum ballots, offering an encouraging preview of the province’s ability to govern itself. Despite deploying 47,000 workers, officials called counting ten questions a “monumental task,” suggesting negotiating international treaties, establishing a currency, and running an entire country should be an absolute fucking breeze.
With roughly three-quarters of counted voters rejecting separation, independence supporters remain confident democracy will eventually produce the correct answer if given enough time. Provincial officials defended the delay, insisting Alberta has everything required for nationhood: oil, confidence, and a breathtaking misunderstanding of administrative responsibility.
Asked why Alberta couldn’t meet its own legally mandated deadline, officials blamed the federal government for not being available to blame.
