Alberta Launches New “Choose Your Own Facts” Referendum Experience

, , ,

A pro-immigration group has filed a complaint with Elections Alberta, alleging the province’s referendum website has bravely abandoned neutrality in favour of something closer to state-sponsored whispering.

The site reportedly presents immigration like a slow leak in the public purse, carefully tallying costs while treating tax contributions from newcomers as an optional subplot best left on the cutting room floor.

Edmonton lawyer Avnish Nanda told CBC News the omissions aren’t accidental, but structural, like a horror film where the audience is shown the blood but never the cause, just enough to keep them afraid and guessing.

Meanwhile, the government has framed the referendum as a conversation, defined loosely here as one side speaking and the other side being summarized into a footnote.

At press time, the website remained live, confidently teaching voters that democracy works best when the facts are curated, trimmed, and quietly buried for their own good.
