Alberta Investigates Outside Interference While Continuing to Generate Its Own

, , , ,

In a province where reality increasingly arrives pre-edited, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced she is seeking higher security clearance to determine whether foreign interference is occurring, or merely being perceived at an inconvenient angle.

Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, Smith said she wants access to classified CSIS briefings, citing “deficiencies” in what her government is told. It remains unclear whether the gap is in the intelligence itself, or in the part where it becomes real.

Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi suggested the issue may not be the absence of information, but its eventual handling. “I sure as hell wouldn’t give her security clearance,” he said, sounding less like a critic and more like a man trying to unplug something before it learns to speak.

Smith’s office did not clarify what interference she suspects, though sources say the leading indicators include “patterns,” “signals,” and a growing sense that someone else has already read the briefing.

Meanwhile, Alberta moves toward a referendum on its future, assuming the future hasn’t already filed the paperwork.
