Alberta Hires Private Contractors To Stand Between Disabled People And Help
Alberta has awarded nearly $100 million to Serco and AKG to manage employment intake for 26,800 disabled Albertans, after determining the disability system still contained government functions that could be converted into revenue.
The companies won’t determine eligibility or provide services. They will simply control assessment, case management and referrals; the insignificant administrative machinery determining whether assistance actually reaches someone.
Serco brings substantial public-sector experience, including a UK subsidiary’s historic fraud settlement and criticism surrounding its Australian disability contact-centre operations.
Meanwhile, ADAP recipients will eventually receive $200 less per month than AISH recipients, while disability organizations that might scrutinize the transition have already lost provincial funding.
The government calls this modernization.
The disabled will be modernized first.
