Alberta government announces new health-care policy: Patients wait for answers, politicians don’t have to give any
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has rejected calls for a public inquiry into alleged health-care procurement irregularities, explaining that while Albertans may have to wait months to see a doctor, anyone suspected of mishandling their health-care dollars deserves immediate protection from uncomfortable questions.
“We provided millions of pages of documents,” Smith explained, emphasizing that the sheer weight of paperwork should more than compensate for the inability to compel witnesses, subpoena evidence, or require anyone to tell the truth.
The Premier praised the independent review, which successfully established that people unwilling to answer questions were, in fact, unwilling to answer questions. With the RCMP reportedly investigating potential fraud, breach of trust, and money laundering, Smith maintained that further scrutiny was unnecessary.
“Albertans deserve transparency,” Smith concluded, “which is why we’ve made absolutely certain nobody can see through it.”
