Ontario Assures Ruined Families Their Money Is In A Better Place
Ontario officials defended the province’s online gambling expansion after problem gambling tripled, calling it a rare example of a provincial policy exceeding expectations. “Nearly 130,000 people with a gambling problem,” said a provincial spokesperson. “Try getting that many people a family doctor.”
Officials emphasized that apps include responsible gambling warnings, positioned between offers of free money sent to customers trying to quit. “We believe in personal responsibility,” the spokesperson added. “We’re responsible for creating the market and taking a cut. You’re responsible for surviving it.”
Asked about gambling-related suicides also tripling, the province said it would carefully review the findings before deciding how prominently to feature the helpline in the next betting commercial.
