Smith Says Provinces Want More Autonomy; Provinces Exercise Autonomy By Refusing To Endorse Her Plan
Premier Danielle Smith says Alberta’s constitutional demands have support across Canada, an assertion strengthened considerably by nobody else saying it.
Smith wants Albertans to endorse letting Alberta appoint judges, override conflicting federal laws, collect federal program money without necessarily participating in the programs, and abolish the Senate; apparently because federalism works best once everyone else stops doing it.
Smith’s office insists other provinces are also “tired of federal overreach.” Other premiers confirmed their solidarity by declining to comment, changing the subject, or presumably staring very intensely at their ringing phones.
Most proposals would require other governments to actually agree, creating the unfortunate possibility that Smith may eventually have to consult Canadians who aren’t already voting in her referendum.
Asked what happens if Canada rejects the proposals, UCP officials confirmed this would prove why Alberta needed them in the first place.
