Alberta Unveils Referendum Question That Somehow Requires More Referendums To Understand
Premier Danielle Smith has officially unveiled Alberta’s separation referendum question, a democratic milestone experts describe as “the political equivalent of hiding your car keys inside another set of car keys.”
Rather than asking Albertans whether they want to leave Canada, voters will choose between remaining in Canada or authorizing the government to begin a legal process that could eventually lead to another referendum on whether Alberta should leave Canada.
The referendum itself will not be legally binding.
“This gives Albertans a direct voice in their future,” said a government spokesperson. “And if that future turns out to be inconvenient, we’ll simply have another future.”
Critics noted the ballot offers no details about what an independent Alberta would actually look like, leaving voters free to imagine anything from a prosperous republic to a giant outdoor waiting room for U.S. statehood.
At press time, officials confirmed the government would respect the results of the referendum by carefully reviewing whether they felt like respecting the results of the referendum.
