Alberta Announces Plan to Ensure Social Programs Remain Adequately Miserable
Disability advocates across the province say they’re simply seeking “clarity” after the premier suggested the government may need to ensure social supports are not so generous that people relocate to use them.
At a press conference Thursday, the premier explained the concern: Alberta must remain attractive to taxpayers, not to people who accidentally require help to live. “Ideally,” she said, “people should arrive here already paying taxes, preferably several.”
The government’s solution includes aligning disability benefits with other regions, particularly those known for their inspirational levels of austerity.
Officials stressed the move is not about cutting support. It’s about ensuring benefits are calibrated to the precise level that proves one truly needs them, while also discouraging suspicious activities like moving somewhere affordable.
Advocates say they’re still confused.
“Apparently disabled people are welcome,” said one organizer, “as long as they show up healthy, wealthy, and paying income tax first.”
