Danielle Smith Previews Budget, Introduces “Have You Tried Blaming Immigrants?” Strategy

, , , ,

Premier Danielle Smith will address Albertans Thursday evening in what is shaping up to be a pre-budget special titled: Have We Considered Blaming Newcomers?

With the United Conservative Party set to table a bleak budget next week, Smith has pointed to sinking oil revenues and the high cost of serving a fast-growing population. The growth, she notes, is largely driven by immigration, a fact that appears poised to do some heavy lifting in the government’s explanation of why the books look like they’ve been through a windstorm.

“This clearly needs to change,” Smith said, ominously, suggesting Albertans should prepare for a “conversation” about sustainability, which in political terms often means someone else is about to be grounded.

On X, chief of staff Rob Anderson warned the “absolute insanity” would stop, while executive director Bruce McAllister denounced mass immigration in sweeping terms. Meanwhile, CBC News will livestream the address, giving viewers a chance to watch fiscal gravity rebranded as border policy in real time.
