Smith Warns: Without New Pipelines, Alberta Oil Could Be America’s Next Humanitarian Intervention

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the dramatic American capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is a clear reminder that Canada must urgently build more oil pipelines, preferably before the next foreign invasion doubles as a business plan.

U.S. President Donald Trump rattled global nerves over the weekend after announcing a military raid on Venezuela, explaining that Washington’s primary goal was to “liberate” the country’s oil reserves into the caring hands of American corporations. The operation, Trump said, was about freedom, stability, and several billion barrels of light crude.

Smith seized on the moment Monday, arguing that watching another oil-rich nation get surprise-acquired underscores the need for Canada to move faster. “Recent events surrounding Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro emphasize the importance of expediting pipelines to diversify our oil export markets,” she said, adding that Alberta would prefer its resources be sold internationally rather than discovered by commandos.

The premier renewed calls for a new pipeline to B.C.’s coast, noting Asia is far enough away to invade politely, with paperwork.
