Only 34% of Americans now substantially trust certified election results, after six years of Republicans patiently teaching voters that democracy is legitimate whenever they win and Venezuelan witchcraft whenever they don’t.

Confidence has also collapsed around foreign affairs, politics and the environment, suggesting Americans have finally achieved bipartisan consensus: whatever Washington says, somebody is probably lying through their teeth.

Experts warn rebuilding institutional trust could take decades.

Fortunately, destroying it requires considerably less expertise. Fire the experts. Politicize the agencies. Call every inconvenient statistic fake. Make truth just another team jersey.

Then, when the government finally stops functioning, point proudly at the wreckage.
