Alberta Government to Abolish Municipal Codes of Conduct – “Just Trust Us” Says Premier

, , ,

In a bold move to streamline governance and foster a “more authentic” political culture, the Alberta government has announced plans to eliminate municipal codes of conduct. Premier Danielle Smith described the codes as “unnecessary shackles” on elected officials, who she insists should be free to exercise their own judgment without the burden of accountability.

“Why bother with written rules when you can rely on a politician’s gut instincts?” said Smith, chuckling as she signed the bill with a pen labeled ‘Trust Me’. “We trust our officials to manage billion-dollar budgets, so why not trust them to behave?”

The proposed legislation, dubbed the Ethics? Just Vibes Act, would strip municipalities of their ability to enforce codes of conduct, a move critics say might lead to a Wild West-style free-for-all in local politics. Proponents, however, argue it will foster “refreshing honesty” among councillors and may even bring back the art of a good, old-fashioned backroom deal.

Opposition leader Rachel Notley responded with, what some think could be sarcasm, saying, “Finally, a government that believes in the power of self-regulation. What could possibly go wrong?”

Meanwhile, municipal officials were seen quietly updating their LinkedIn profiles.
