Trump: Canada Playing Dangerous Game With China, May Lose Pucks and Privileges
President Donald Trump warned Canada on Thursday that its growing trade ties with China could lead to the gravest geopolitical consequence imaginable: the sudden loss of ice hockey.
Asked about Britain and China improving cooperation, Trump instead pivoted north, explaining that Canada was “doing very poorly” and had made a reckless mistake by engaging Beijing. According to Trump, China’s opening move in any trade relationship would be swift and cruel. “The first thing they’re gonna do is say you’re not allowed to play ice hockey anymore,” he said, offering no evidence but great confidence.
Canada recently reached a deal with China to ease tariffs on canola and electric vehicles, a development Trump has responded to by threatening tariffs of up to 100 per cent and, apparently, cultural extinction.
Trump, who has previously suggested Canada become a U.S. state, remains irritated by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Davos speech urging countries to stand up to Washington. In response, Trump reportedly revoked Canada’s invitation to his “Board of Peace” for Gaza, leaving the nation diplomatically isolated, economically suspect, and nervously guarding its hockey rinks.
