Nearly eight decades after Hollywood first banded together to oppose Joseph McCarthy’s witch hunts, Jane Fonda has dusted off the cobwebs of history and relaunched the Committee for the First Amendment, apparently deciding the only thing America needs more than streaming platforms is another celebrity letterhead.
“The stakes are too high,” Fonda declared, while sipping sustainably sourced tea and rehearsing for her 14th retirement. “This time, we’re not just defending free speech from politicians. We’re defending it from Twitter threads, YouTube comments, and, God help us, TikTok teenagers.”
The new committee already boasts members including actors, activists, and several people who mistook the email invite for a Netflix pitch meeting. Critics argue the effort reeks of nostalgia politics, like rebooting Friends but with more subpoenas.
Still, Fonda insists it’s vital: “If we don’t speak out now, the next thing you know, Siri will be naming names.”
