Republicans Warn Releasing Epstein Files Could Permanently Damage Public Trust in People Who Deserve None
In a stunning betrayal of Washington’s longstanding bipartisan tradition of protecting powerful men from the consequences of their actions, Republican Thomas Massie is demanding the Trump administration actually release the Epstein files, rather than continue treating federal law like a nondisclosure agreement for the ruling class.
The original law, signed by Trump himself, apparently contained a devastating loophole: it assumed the Justice Department would obey the law.
With millions of files still withheld and others redacted beyond recognition, Congress must now legislate that legislation is, in fact, legally binding.
White House officials insist the administration remains committed to transparency, provided it doesn’t reveal anything.
The new bill would allow survivors to access their own records and sue the DOJ for withholding them.
Republicans have condemned the proposal as a dangerous precedent in which wealthy, politically connected men could face consequences for their actions.
