Juno Winner’s Empty Seats Spark National Discussion, Existential Crisis

, ,

Fresh off their Juno win, Canadian singer-songwriter Riley Hart expected a packed house at their Toronto show. Instead, they performed for 42 people, two of whom thought they were at a TED Talk.

The dismal turnout has ignited a wider conversation about Canada’s struggling music industry, with artists blaming streaming platforms, algorithms, and the fact that most Canadians only emerge from hibernation for Drake or Tragically Hip tribute bands.

“It’s hard out here,” Hart said mid-set, before reapplying their own wristband to gain access to the green room.

Industry insiders note that government grants are abundant, just not for anything people want to listen to. “You can tour the Yukon performing experimental accordion pop and get funding,” said one promoter. “But sell tickets? That’s extra.”

Hart’s next show is reportedly being downsized from a venue to a bus shelter. “At least people might be waiting for something.”
