“I don’t know that môniyâw” Alberta Chief pushes back against photo
On April 9th, Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations Grand Chief Greg Desjarlais released a formal statement after receiving an overwhelming amount of text messages and calls from cousins, aunties, and uncles. The source of concern comes after candidate Pierre Poilievre posted a photo of the two taken at a work event in March.
“Sometimes as a public figure you get asked to take photos and it comes with the job but I feel I do need to make it clear, with an official statement, that I have no familiarity with this man and Indigenous people are all about connecting kinship and relationships,” commented Desjarlais. When you read the comments on the statement, it’s clear how Indigenous people are feeling.
To help us understand the community concern, we reached out to an Auntie for further comment, “You know in that old 90s movie Single White Female or Ingrid Goes West or the upcoming reboot of Single White Female, there is a squirrely, kinda shifty, somewhat mentally unregulated white girl who makes up relationship or presents like something is totally different? It kinda feels like that but the white girl is a boy and that boy is a man and he’s the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and he’s pretending to have friends and support from Indigenous peoples. All of this “small” stuff is like actively threatening Indigenous sovereignty …. but hey it’s only a photo, right?”
