Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot issued a defiant response Tuesday to the growing Stop Killing Games initiative, telling critics that sunsetting beloved titles is “part of our core gameplay loop.”
“Fans keep asking us to stop killing games,” Guillemot said, pacing a stage littered with unplugged servers and discarded franchise logos. “But what they don’t understand is… we get XP for it.”
The movement, sparked after Ubisoft announced plans to shut down online services for yet another slate of games, has accused the company of “digital euthanasia” and treating players like “walking wallets with Stockholm syndrome.”
“Look, when we delist a game and brick DLC people paid for, we’re not killing it,” Guillemot added. “We’re setting it free. Like a digital Viking funeral… except we charge $9.99 for the fire arrows.”
Ubisoft stock rose slightly after the remarks, buoyed by investor confidence in “bold innovation through ritual sacrifice.”
