Alberta government apologizes after accidentally acknowledging Indigenous people
The Alberta government apologized Tuesday after Premier Danielle Smith’s Alberta Day statement accidentally acknowledged Indigenous people, an oversight corrected roughly one hour later.
The original statement recognized Indigenous Peoples’ “enduring connection to and stewardship of this land,” wording officials reportedly discovered while conducting the UCP’s traditional final fact-check: removing anything that might upset the comments section of a Take Back Alberta Facebook post.
Officials insist the deletion was accidental, although critics noted accidentally deleting Indigenous people from Alberta’s history is less a typo than an impressively concise summary of provincial politics.
Embarrassingly, the acknowledgement remained in the French version, briefly establishing Alberta’s official position that Indigenous history exists exclusively in Quebec’s language.
Smith’s office apologized and promised tighter editing procedures going forward.
“Albertans deserve better,” said a spokesperson. “Next year we’ll start the province’s history at the discovery of oil and save everyone a lot of trouble.”
