Alberta community shocked organized white supremacists exist outside provincial politics
Residents of a small Alberta community are shocked after learning a white supremacist group held military-style drills at their local community centre, forcing Albertans to confront the disturbing possibility that extremists may exist somewhere other than anonymous Twitter accounts followed by their MLA.
Second Sons Canada describes itself as a “men’s nationalist club,” the increasingly popular euphemism for organizations whose hobbies include weightlifting, masks, and explaining which Canadians should be deported at gunpoint.
Residents expressed disbelief that such extremism could reach their quiet community, despite Alberta spending the last decade treating increasingly explicit far-right rhetoric as an exciting new constituency.
Officials stressed there is no evidence local residents supported the gathering.
Provincial leaders also condemned the group after confirming none of its members were currently running for nomination.
